Page history last edited by marvinman@... 17 years, 3 months ago

This is a handy little list of all the terms that are used on GAFF and its forums. It was originally compiled by forum member Araniell in this topic.

Edited by Marvin for a more contemporary, streamlined use. Edited out the crap that people already knew in this sort of work

A

AFN: Adultfanfiction.net. A website which hosts R and NC-17 rated fan fiction.

Agony In Pink: Particularly notorious torture ‘fic involving the Pink Power Ranger. Can be found in the Golden Oldies section.

Ass Baby: The bizarre and improbable progeny of MPreg.

AU: Alternate Universe. A well-done AU fic can be a joy to behold, often based on a challenging "what-if" question. Unfortunately AU is more often used as a form of canon rape, or as an excuse for plain lazy writing.

Avatar: On message boards, an avatar is the picture which appears with a poster’s name. More generically, it is a character which represents a person online. Self Insert characters may be referred to by this term.

B

Badfic: Poorly written fan fiction.

Bamf:‘Bamf" means a character (almost always an SI) suddenly appearing within a canon world. The term comes from the X-Men comics - specifically the sound-effect used when Nightcrawler teleports.

Biseinen: Japanese term for "Beautiful Man". Distinguished from Bishounen by apparent age; Bishounen are young, often boyish, whereas Biseinen are unmistakeably mature adults.

Bishounen, Bishie: Japanese term ‘Pretty boy’. Adopted by fan girls to denote their crush, usually within an Anime fandom

C

Canon: The officially endorsed facts of a fandom. Information that appears in the actual books/films/comics/episodes/games themselves. Compare to Fanon.

Celebrian: The wife of Lord Elrond in The Lord of the Rings. Also the name of another infamously bad fanfic to be found in the Golden Oldies section of the site. The dead horse that GAFFers always beat on when they are asked what things GAFF has produced lately besides pissy debates and a sad outlook on the future of both sides in this war.

Clue-by-four, Cluebat: Metaphorical big stick used for beating sense into people who have utterly missed the point.

D

DADA: HP Fandom. Defence Against the Dark Arts.

DDA: Dark, Depressing, and Angsty.

Domlijah: Real Person Slash with Dominic Monaghan and Elijah Woods. Popular when the movie "Lord of the Rings" came out. Is still practiced by the fat kids with no lives.

Doujinshi: Fancomic. Like fanfic, but in comic form. Usually in manga-style drawing. Some variants involve weird sex because the authors are Japanese, see Hentai.

E

EveKnight75: Is fat. See fat, both definitions.

F

Fag: Something incredibly lame and stupid. Not to be confused with the homosexual slur.

Fanbrat: Derogatory term for the arrogant or infantile fans, of either gender, to be found in just about any fandom.

Fandom Wank: A community dedicated to snarking in-fandom fights in much the same way that GAFF snarks fan fiction. If a discussion on Harry Potter’s eye-color has turned into a 12 page exchange of venom spitting rants, then it’s probably being laughed at on F_W.

Fanon: Fanon is a fact which isn’t given (or at least isn’t explicitly stated) in canon, but which nevertheless has become widely accepted as fact be the fans. Some of it makes sense, some of it leaves canon-purists hopping and spitting in impotent rage. also a set of invented background information filling in blanks in canon and adopted by one or more writers as truth when writing their fan fiction.

Fat: How dedicated a particular person is to his/her fandom. The more fat you are, the more depressing and lame you sound. Not to be confused with the real life definition of fat.

Femme Slash: Romance, smut or lemon where both characters in the pairing are female. ’Fic featuring lesbian sex. (f/f)

Fluff: A short, lighthearted story (usually a romance) which focuses on the characters and contains no angst or drama.

G

GAFA: Godawful Fan Art

Gary Stu: Mary Sue’s less ubiquitous male counterpoint. He is often surly and defiant, but is always sure to come out on top and save the day. Gary sometimes likes to disguise himself as a canon character. Also sometimes known as Marty Stu, Larry Stu, Harry Stu and Marty Sam.

Grelvish: It’s not real elvish but the fan kiddies insist on using it in every LotR fic (sometimes with amusing results). The name comes from the most common form of faux-elvish to be found online, that used by the Grey Company as a gaming language.

H

H/c: Hurt/Comfort. Generally a ‘fic where tragedy befalls character A, and character B makes it all better with hot steamy sex.

Hentai: Sexually explicit anime or manga.

Het: Heterosexual. Used as a code for romance or smut where the pairing is m/f. It's boring because it doesn't have two men having ass sex.

Heywood: An Inyuasha fan who doesn't take his meds, and therefore is surrounded by fangirls.

Ho!Mione: Some characters get butchered by badfic more often than others. Poor Hermione Granger (from Harry Potter) has been forced to undergo growth spurts, makeovers and frontal lobotomies so often that her sassy badfic persona (with curves in all the right places) has earned it’s own name.

I

IanGainsborough: A person who seriously thinks the movie "Stay Alive" is on par with "North by Northwest" or some other movie classic.

IC: In character. The opposite to OOC, and unfortunately a much rarer phenomenon.

J

Johnny Wizard: A troll who reappears now and again to spam the boards with long cut-and-paste rants about the state of the world in general. The troll cage in the GAFF forums even bears his name.

K

Karmyn75: Completely retarded.

Keyboard rape: Excesssssivvvvvvveeee, use of Letters or punctuation !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also includes smilies and ascii are or whatever it's called when you make picture by typing stuff out. And LOTS and LOTS OF TYPING WITH CAPS LOCK ON! That explain it for you!?!?!?!

Knorg: A troll who gave up and joined the throngs to co-exist.

L

Legomance: One of the seven billion or so stories in LotR where Legolas falls in love with the author, or the author’s friend, or the author’s Sue, or the author’s pen pal’s golden retriever.

M

Make-Over: Drastic alteration of established character, in blatant defiance of canon. Usually, the intent is to turn the character into the author's fantasy ideal, eg SexyCuddly!Snape or Gentleman!Draco. Also occaionally used to turn a canon character into a two-dimensional villain, eg PsychoBitch!Buffy; or to turn a canon character in a Mary Sue. See Also Pod-Person.

Mary Sue: How does one sum up Mary Sue? Named after a character from ‘A Trekkie Tale’, a Sue is an original character who’s too perfect to be true. Sue is beautiful, talented, better than any of the canon characters and often tragically misunderstood. Everybody loves Mary Sue (apart from the readers). Wherever she goes, canon is twisted and changed in honour of her divine magnificence. Sometimes canon characters are warped into Sues. See Ho!Mione.

Marty Stu: See Gary Stu

Mini-Balrog: Too faggy a definition to stay up because it is always sucking off the other definitions in the M section

Monkey, A: Because everything is funnier with a monkey. (This definition is dedicated to the GAFFers for how faggy they are when it comes to some things.)

Mpreg: Male pregnancy. We don’t get it either, but we sure love jerkin' to it!

MST, or MiST: Mystery Science Theatre was a TV show from the 80s. The basic premise was to play a bad movie and have characters sitting in a movie theatre snark at it. In this style, MSTs are ‘fics taken apart and punctuated with sarcastic and witty comments. These aren't funny, avoid as needed.

"My hed iz pastede on yay!": See Fandom Wank wiki.

O

One Rule, The: The One Commandment of posting on the GAFF forums. The rule is that you don't post anything that would get the site shut down. This meant no inline kiddie porn, which some forum members *loooved*.

Otherverse: AU story in which the canon characters are transported to a different location eg a modern day high school.

P

Pastede on yay!: Shoddily or incompetently executed. etym see "My hed iz pastede on yay!"

Plot Bunny: An idea for a fanfic that you just can’t seem to shake. Called bunnies because of the rate at which they multiply. Heed the words of Great Tim, these bunnies can be dangerous.

Plothole: A lapse in logic within the structure of a story's narrative; a failure of continuity. Often caused by the infamous 'didn't think it through' moth.

Pod-Person: A Mary Sue masquerading as a canon character; a canon character who has, though a make-over, been transformed into a Mary Sue.

R

Review Whoring: Believe it or not, some people only write fan fiction for the ego boost of getting reviews. (Never!) Methods of review whoring include subtle hints on other people's review boards (“OMG ur fic is soo good, review mine!!”), and holding the story to ransom (“I won’t write another chapter until I have 250 reviews for this one!!!!!!!”)

S

Seme: The guy on top during yaoi fic, anime, manga or doujin. Although not always, the seme is usually strong, masculine, tall, and experienced male. See also Uke.

Spork: The ultimate in cutlery accessories. The spork is both spoon and fork, perfect for gouging one’s eyes out. If a GAFFer uses this, it's usually because he/she is retarded and should be given swirlies.

Sue: Shorthand for Mary Sue.

Suethor: One who perpetrates Mary Sues

Suvian: Of or relating to a Sue.

T

TOSsing: What happens when someone manages to kick GAFF off of yet another set of forums. Eventually forced Guru to relocate to a private server.

Troll: Somebody who posts on the boards or writes a deliberate badfic just to provoke a reaction. Also a cheap, easy term used to justify hatred for another board member.

U

Uke: The guy on the bottom in Yaoi ‘fic, anime, manga or doujin. Although not always, the uke is usually weak, weepy and awkward male. See also seme.

‘Urple Prose: Like purple prose but more grandiose, loquacious and nauseatingly embellished than anything any reader ought to be subjected too.

UST: Unresolved Sexual Tension. What GAFFers love and masturbate to in bed when the lights go out.

#/Symbol

(Adjective)!(Character): A special type of conjunction often used on the forums to denote a specific or dominant out of character trait. Eg Wangsty!Xander, Pregnant!Legolas, Vampire!Snape etc.

!!one!eleven!!:Just a piss take of the inability of a person under the influence of ‘the suger hieee!!’ to hold down two keys simultaneously.

Man, they stole half of these from Fandom Wank.
